Let it be solved - LJ Idol, Season 6, Topic 4 (Current Events)
On the morning of August 4th, I got a call from my mother to tell me that Kathy Briles had been murdered. Kathy was the wife of my grandmother's doctor. And it hit her hard. She often went to Kathy and Doc's house for dinner. They would often come over to make sure that Grandma didn't need anything. In the 17 years since my grandfather passed away, Doc and Kathy treated Grandma's heart and soul as well as her body. They were family. And someone took a member of that family away. It took several days for the news to come out. Someone had broken into the Briles home, bound Kathy and beat her to death. Doc was quickly eliminated as a suspect, as he was at his clinic all day. The reports stated that the murder occurred some time between 2pm and when he arrived home at 8 and found her. Some items had been taken, but it hasn't been said what those items are. I don't think it matters, because we already know the most important thing that was taken - Kathy's life. The police have talked to the neighbors. No one saw anything. They searched the woods around her house. They didn't find anything. The search inside the house brought back some DNA evidence and some fingerprints that they weren't able to eliminate as being from someone who was supposed to be in the house. A couple months later, someone was arrested for other home invasions in the area. He's still a suspect in Kathy's death, but his fingerprint and DNA evidence don't match what was collected. As of right now, there's a reward offered for information. $50,000 - money put up by Doc and the family, CrimeStoppers and the Gold Star Club of Manatee County. This reward was put up in mid-to-late October. We're now at mid-November and no one has come forward yet. I worry that this mystery is one that will never be solved. The longer it goes with no suspects, the harder it will be to find one. It will be an open wound for her family and friends, one that may never close. I know it has effected my grandmother greatly. For the first time in 30 years, she's considering leaving Florida to live back in New York. I'm not sure if it's because she wants to be near her family or away from the tragedy that still breaks her heart. But my mother is looking for an apartment for her in an assisted living facility. But maybe I'm being too pessimistic. Maybe someone will remember something that will lead to a break in the case. Maybe the police will find something to lead them in the right direction. Maybe the person responsible will get a conscience and come forward. Maybe... All we can have is hope. It's all any of us can have. Daily Thought Crime Oh Yeah... Him Too!And now… A witness or relative who publicly expressed some level of doubt about the accusations is added to the list of suspects. Check. Bad sign. Very, very bad sign. * |

Everybody has a snapping point. Mine apparently involves wrapping paper.
I'ma full of sewing ideas! You know, sewing is really the ultimate in sneaky jury-rigging. I've been buying tops, knowing I can nip-and-tuck as need be, and I find myself planning to adjust my current wardrobe just a bit here and there. It doesn't hurt that I'm getting really fast on the sewing machine. The summer-weight kimono robe is almost done. Just needs a hem, and the belt needs to be finished, but that's it. This means another item gets tossed on the 'garage sale' pile, as the old robe is still nice, but I'm done with it and the memories that go with it. I 'still' need to go through a few more things for the sale, but damn, at least I'm clearing out cloth, right? By making things and by letting it go so others can create. :) Okay, Mom's. Wow. I finally snapped like a cheap garter, and had an intervention. A wrapping paper-and-gift bag intervention. I amassed ALL of her boxes, bags, bows, ribbons and paper in one giant pile in the center of the playroom. Mom was watching me frantically heaping the boxes and bags together. "What are you doing?" "This, this is an intervention. You have gift wrapping spread from stem to stern in this place, from the galley to the bird's nest. I have grouped all of it together, to help you realize that you do not need to buy any gift wrapping for the next twenty years. Seriously. I want you to look at all of this, all of the wrapping I was able to find, and come to a realization. You do not need anymore. Say it with me." "...I don't need any more." "Why?" "...Because this is a lot more than I thought I had." "And why should you not buy more?" "Because I'm wasting money, since I have perfectly good wrap right here." "Very, very good." I have pictures. I do! I snuck in my camera. ( Read more... ) |

With a smug neener-neener type shout out to all you Texans *snerk* http://www.livescience.com/culture/091110-fifty-happy-states.htmlOh, y'all think we're crazy and brainless? Well we don't care, cuz we're just so friggin happy!!And you southern, midwestern-ish states? *coughTexascough* Of course you're always criticizing California; of course you're always angry. You're just so darn poopy miserable, is why! HAHAHAHAHAHA 'Course, it could be worse..Texas is far from the bottom of the list..you could be Kentucky. Really, it seems to me it would have been the opposite, based on the "perma-pissed" attitude of most southern Californians, along with the seriously-courteous, cheerful Texans of my experience. Aha, that's it! The nicey-nice Stepford people of Northern Cali must have skewed the average! Personally I'd be miserable in Texas because of the flat, humid countryside (not the populace), whereas the mountains, desert and nearby ocean in California do in fact cheer me. But then, I am outdoorsy and nature-oriented anyway. Were I more cosmopolitan, I'd be happier in New York or some such. Or Austin. Or okay, maybe even Dallas. :p :) Not surprised to see Mississippi near the bottom of the list. But.. West Virginia??!Really?? Aww, John Denver was wrong then *sniff* |

Green Room - Week 4 - Weekend Edition
Well this has been a week huh? In my various travels over the Wide World of LJ I've seen comments of all shapes and sizes and differing opinions on this and that. One of them stuck out to me. I'll be honest, I'm fuzzy at the moment on who it was and I may have even gotten the quote wrong so I'm going to paraphrase: That *a lot* of the entries this week are some of the best. That the bar is being raised week to week and how proud people must be to see it. That interpretation is obviously going to vary from person to person, but as one of the people who can honestly say that they look at every entry, every week (for 6 seasons now) I think there's a great deal of truth in there. That said, the second part of the paraphrase was that they thought it was a shame that with all of the attention on a particular entry and responses, that these people were being lost in the shuffle. It's a common enough accordance in every situation. But when you get something a little bigger, you tend to see it happen more often. Fortunately you also get the reaction of people being concerned that it might be happening. So, that said - what entries out there do you think ARE NOT receiving the attention they deserve? *** So, other than that Mrs Lincoln, how was the play? How was your weekend? How was linking your entry to the Topic post before 8 pm EST today? http://community.livejournal.com/therealljidol/268775.html*** Happy birthday to our own elfwench!! |

North Dallas OBGyns
I'm just wondering if anyone out there has some recommendations for a good OBGyn in the North Dallas/Plano/Frisco area. Preferably one that is affiliated with Baylor and takes Aetna, but I'll take any suggestions or warnings. Thanks! X-posted to dfwtx |

Philly girl #2: Benjamin Netanyahu? Philly girl #1: Yeah. Philly girl #2: Wait... isn't he from Israel? Philly girl #1: Nope. He went to Cheltenham high school, same as my dad. Philly girl #2: What happened? Philly girl #1: My dad said, "if you poke me one more time, I'm gonna punch you in the face." Philly girl #2: (silence) Philly girl #1: He poked him.

Obviously inebriated blonde: Well, if we do, I think I should put up a Facebook status so everyone knows. Obviously inebriated brunette: I'm pretty sure the tox screen will show it. (ten seconds later) Obviously inebriated brunette: Kill me. Oh, wait, no need. I'll be dead in three hours. Obviously inebriated blonde: Just don't go dying in my bed... that's creepy. (five seconds later) Obviously inebriated brunette: Um... did you just burp? Obviously inebriated blonde: Yeah. Why? Obviously inebriated brunette: Because it just went up my nose. first time beef roast in the crock
This was my first time attempting a real meal in a crock. I'd used one earlier this year, throwing some chicken and broth and whatever I had in it just to try it out, and it kept turning off in the middle of the cooking process, and I returned the crock and never got a new one. Sad. However, my new roomie has a giant oval crock so last night at midnight I decided to have a roast extravaganza. ( recipe and pics ) |
