An interesting challenge is coming for me next week. I have an audition for a short film about the conflict between religion and the gay/lesbian community. I'm reading for two different characters, both of which are pretty homophobic (one is blue-collar, the other more middle-class).

I abhor homophobia and find the sort of people who would openly practice it on a bus to be repellent. On the other hand, I need to be true to my abilities as an actor; if I do the kind of AWESOME job I'm capable of, it's going to mean creating a character who's more than just a caricature or a strawman. I want my gay-hatin' character to be human and relatable.

I need to find a way to balance my performance so I stay true to my values as well as my devotion to my craft.
